End it.

Slavery Facts from Enditmovement.com

  • Slavery occurs where one person exercises the ‘right’ of ownership over a person. (League of Nations)
  • They are held against their will often under the threat of violence. Physical, emotional and mental abuse is often part of their enslavement. (IJM)
  • Slavery still exists. It is estimated that there are anything between 10 million and 27 million slaves in the world today. (ILO and freetheslaves.net)
  • The reason for this broad range is that those people being counted are largely a ‘hidden’ population. (CNN Freedom Project)
  • It is estimated that human trafficking alone generates annual profits of around $32 billion. (ILO)
  • The majority of trafficking victims are between 18 and 24 years of age. (UN.GIFT)
  • In 1850, the cost of a slave (in today’s dollars) was $40,000, the avg. price of a slave today is $90. (Free the Slaves)
  • The victims most vulnerable are women and children. Children in particular are sold, bonded, trafficked, subjected to commercial sexual exploitation, recruited into armed conflicts and forced to work as domestic workers. (antislavery.org)
  • Several factors contribute to the persistence of slavery practices despite it being illegal in most countries, most significantly, poverty, the lack of enforcement of anti-slavery laws, and crime and corruption, including at the state level. (Free the Slaves)
  • Slavery has various forms today including human trafficking, forced labour, descent-based slavery, bonded labour and child labour. (antislavery.org)
  • Other less known forms of slavery include domestic servitude, forced marriage and those traded for the purpose of organ removal. (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime)
  • Slavery occurs when one person completely controls another person, using violence or the threat of violence to maintain that control, exploits them economically, pays them nothing and they cannot walk away.1 (CNN Freedom Project)cropped-fb_cover4.jpg

Oscars!

Well, so much for posting at least twice a month for January and February… although there are a few days left for this month!

teen oscar partyToday I threw another Oscar pre-party for the teens at the library, first one in our new meeting room! Got some decorations from Party City, borrowed a chocolate fountain (YUM), and rolled out a red carpet for the photo-ops! We watched a few short films, talked about the nominees, and made our predictions for this year’s winners. We really wanted to play with the new green screen we got for the upcoming film club this spring, but since I have yet to find a way to hang this screen, that had to wait.

All in all, a great program, and a great turnout! The teens had fun making their predictions, even if they haven’t seen most of the nominees for Best Picture. They’re pulling for Les Mis, Brave, and Paperman for Best Picture, Animated Feature, and Animated Short.

Personally, I want Lincoln to win, but I’m predicting Argo for Best Picture. Totally loved Brave, and as far as best Animated Short, I can’t decide whether I loved Paperman, Head Over Heels, or Fresh Guacamole the best!

All I know is, is that if Tommy Lee Jones doesn’t get Best Supporting Actor for playing Thaddeus Stevens in Lincoln, I’m going to cry. Unless Alan Arkin wins for Argo. I might just get a little misty-eyed instead.

The Oscars are totally my “Superbowl.”

In other (random) news…

  • Once Upon A Time is killing me. Seriously, I cannot wait for the next episode…
  • Finally completed a full, detailed outline of my novel from start to finish! More on this, later…
  • Favorite read this year so far: There You’ll Find Me by Jenny B. Jones
  • Saw a preview for 42, the Jackie Robinson film. Definitely need to see that.

Happy 2013!

So it’s definitely been a while. Crazy semester + holidays + the cold from Hades has made the past few months a blur. So, new year, first post of 2013! And of course, I have to start with the obligatory “Best of 2012″ post, but instead of doing separate lists for the best books I read etc., here’s a summary of… everything!

2012

But first, the best of the best for the year: the birth of my beautiful, precious and perfect niece, Penelope. Nothing else can possibly compare, she is absolutely the cutest baby on the planet (seriously, there is no argument), and so her arrival is exempt from this list.

After that, here are my 12 highlights of 2012, in no particular order…

  1. Getting Belvedere, our new Great Pyrenees puppy.
  2. The Hobbit. Honestly, it’s like I’m 17 all over again. Everything about it is amazing.
  3. Our new library. After years of waiting, we finally have our beautiful new building.
  4. Meeting Adam Baldwin. He’s so much taller in person!
  5. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. My favorite YA novel this year.
  6. Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen, definitely a very close second.
  7. Meeting Patricia McCormick at the TXLA conference.
  8. Discovering a handful of Revolutionary War Veteran ancestors!
  9. Once Upon a Time!!!
  10. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. Outstanding modern web-series adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
  11. Star Wars: The Old Republic. Everything I’d hoped it would be!
  12. Lincoln. No, not the one with the vampires, the one with Bilbo and King Thranduil. Wait…

Runners-up: Halo 4, Pinterest, chaperoning the church youth camp, The Avengers, my new car, Hobbit Day at the library, Brave, The Sanctuary by Ted Dekker, and the Altar of Love by Downhere (favorite song).

Countdown to 30…

I thought about including some New Year’s Resolutions for 2013, but a realization struck me. I’m turning 30 in 16 months. It’s blowing my mind right now. So instead of half-hearted resolutions for the next year, I’m setting serious goals for this looming milestone, goals that I WILL accomplish. Except for those circumstances that are beyond my control, I will not allow myself to slack off and fail these. These are too important. And a little personal, but for accountability’s sake, I’m sharing them. Friends and family and fellow believers, please pray for me.

  1. I will finish my novel.
  2. I will lose 80-100 pounds. (Prayers definitely appreciated.)
  3. I will have updated this thing at least twice a month. Hopefully at least once a week.
  4. I will have read through the Bible entirely, and kept a consistent journal with it.
  5. I will have read at least two books a month, and at least one a YA novel.
  6. I will have written both of my Compassion girls once a month.
  7. I will have paid off my credit cards.

There you have it. And here I go!
